What this site is
Winter Perch covers winter birding setups: heated bird baths and de-icers, high-fat feeding, cold-weather feeders, and shelter. 44 pages, five sections, one season.
The reason it is winter-only is that the general birding sites treat winter as a handful of scattered articles rather than as a project. Nobody links the bath to the suet to the roost box, and those three things are one decision — you are keeping a set of small animals alive through the coldest four months of the year, and water, fat and shelter are the three legs of it.
Who writes it
Scooter M.. An enthusiast who is genuinely into this — I read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and do the math. No lab coat.
That is a deliberately small claim and it is the honest one. I am not an ornithologist, I do not have a test lab, and I do not have a wall of bird bath heaters in a garage. What I have is the patience to read eight manufacturer listings, notice that four of them do not publish a wattage, and write that down.
What we do not do
- We do not test the products. We do not own them, we have not used them, and we will not imply otherwise. Everyone in this category says they tested a dozen bird bath heaters. We have not tested any, and we say so.
- We accept no free products and no sponsored placements. Nothing on this site can be bought, and no brand has ever tried hard enough for it to be a difficult conversation.
- We do not publish ratings we did not collect. There is no star score on any product here, and no rating markup in the structured data, because we have no reviews to aggregate.
- We do not print a price we cannot verify today. Where there is no live price, the page says “Check price” — never a number we remember.
What we do instead
Read the manufacturers’ own listings and compile the published specifications, with a link to the listing each figure came from. Compute what each unit costs to run for a winter, at an electricity rate cited to the US Energy Information Administration, with the formula printed so anyone can rerun it. Check the prices daily. Say plainly where a maker publishes nothing.
That last one turns out to be the interesting finding of this whole project. Of the complete heated baths in our registry, several state no wattage at all — which means their buyers cannot compute a running cost from the manufacturer’s own figure. That is a real gap in a category where cost is the second question everybody asks, and we would rather report it than quietly fill the column with a plausible guess.
