What a Heated Bird Bath Actually Costs to Run
Everyone in this category says pennies a day. Nobody shows the arithmetic. Here it is, at a cited rate, with the formula written out so you can substitute your own.

At the current US average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour, a 50 W de-icer run flat out for a four-month winter costs about $26. A 150 W heated bath costs about $79. Both are ceilings: every unit is thermostatic and switches off once the water is clear, so the real bill lands lower.
The formula
There is no trick to this, which is what makes the category's silence about it odd. The arithmetic is one line:
The only input you need that we cannot supply is your own rate, and it is printed on your electricity bill. The national average we use throughout this site comes from the US Energy Information Administration's Electric Power Monthly, table 5.3, and it is a real published figure rather than a round number we picked.

Rated wattage is the ceiling, not the average. Every unit on this page is thermostatically controlled: the element switches off once the water is above freezing and stays off until it drops again. A mild winter can hold the real duty cycle under 30 percent; a Minnesota January can push it near 100. The figures below are the worst case at full draw, because that is the only number the maker actually stands behind. We do not estimate a duty cycle for a unit we have not measured.

Why the real number is lower, and why we do not print it
Every figure above assumes the element draws its rated wattage continuously for 24 hours a day, 120 days running. Nothing here does that. Every unit on this site is thermostatically controlled: the element comes on when the water approaches freezing and cuts out once it is clear.
Erva is the one maker that publishes the actual set points — on at about 38 F, off at about 65 F — and those numbers tell you a lot. In a Virginia December, where daytime highs sit above freezing, the element may run a small fraction of the time. In a Minnesota January it may run nearly continuously for weeks.
The five things that move your real bill
- Your rate. The national average is 18.34 cents. Real US residential rates range from roughly half that to more than double it. Substitute yours — the formula is one line.
- Your climate. Duty cycle is the single biggest variable, and it is entirely local.
- Wind. An exposed basin loses heat by convection far faster than a sheltered one. Siting a bath out of the prevailing wind is free and does more for your bill than any spec on the box.
- Basin size and depth. More water is more thermal mass to hold above freezing. A 20-inch basin costs more to keep open than a 14-inch one at the same wattage, because the element runs longer.
- Whether you unplug it. Some people run a de-icer only during forecast freezes. That works, halves the season, and requires you to remember.
Is it worth it?
That is a judgment, not a calculation, but the calculation informs it. Twenty-six to seventy-nine dollars for a winter is roughly the cost of the suet you will put out over the same period — and open water is arguably the scarcer resource. Birds get most of their winter water from snow and dripping ice, and eating snow costs body heat to melt it. A bath is not a decorative extra on top of a feeding setup; it is the part most yards are missing.
If the number is still too high, the honest options are a lower-wattage unit, a smaller basin, better siting out of the wind, or the no-electricity methods — which work less well, and we say so.

- Rated wattage from the manufacturer's own listing, cited on each product. Where a maker publishes nothing, the unit is absent from the table rather than estimated into it.
- Electricity rate from a named, dated public source — EIA Electric Power Monthly, table 5.3 — not a round figure.
- Full draw, no assumed duty cycle. We publish the ceiling and state the caveat, because we have not measured any of these units.
- The formula is shown, so anyone can rerun it with their own rate and their own hours.

- How much does a heated bird bath cost to run per month?
- At 18.34 cents per kWh and full draw: a 50 W unit is about $6.60 a month, an 80 W unit about $10.60, and a 150 W unit about $19.80. Thermostatic cycling brings all three down.
- How much electricity does a 150 W bird bath de-icer use?
- 150 W for 24 hours is 3.6 kWh, which is about 66 cents a day at the current national average rate. Over a 120-day winter at full draw that is 432 kWh, or about $79.
- Do heated bird baths run constantly?
- No. They are thermostatic. Erva publishes its set points — on near 38 F, off near 65 F — and every other unit here behaves similarly even where the maker does not print the numbers.
- Is a lower wattage unit cheaper overall?
- To run, yes, and by a lot over a season. But an underpowered unit in a large or exposed basin runs continuously and still loses, which costs you the full wattage and gets you ice anyway. Match the element to the basin.
