What a de-icer actually is
A submersible de-icer is a sealed heating element in a weighted housing, usually shaped like a rock so it looks less like an appliance sitting in your bird bath. You drop it in, run the cord over the rim, and plug it into an outdoor GFCI socket. A thermostat inside switches the element on when the water approaches freezing and off again once it is clear.
That is the entire product. There is no smart anything, no app, no display. Which is a good thing: the failure modes in this category are cords and outlets, not electronics, and there is nothing here to go wrong in a way that leaves you with a frozen bath in February.
Sizing: match the watts to the basin, not to the winter you fear
The single most common mistake here is buying too much wattage. More watts is not more capability in a bath that does not need it — it is a bigger bill for the same open water. Use the basin as the primary input and the climate as the modifier.

The three things that go wrong
1. The cord is shorter than the yard
Several of these ship with a six-foot lead. That means the bath has to live within six feet of an outdoor socket, and nobody discovers this until the box is open. The wrong fix is an indoor extension cord, which is how this category starts fires. The right fix is an outdoor-rated, GFCI-protected extension of the correct gauge, or moving the bath. 2. The basin cracks anyway
A de-icer keeps the water liquid; it does not keep the material dry. Concrete and unglazed ceramic absorb water into the material itself, and when the power drops for a night, that trapped water freezes and expands inside the stone. If your bath is concrete, a de-icer is a partial solution at best — a complete heated bath in plastic or metal is the real one.
3. It ends up looking like a cable in a bowl
It is one. The rock-shaped housings help, and the paintable K&H units help more — spray the housing to match your basin and it largely disappears. The cord is the part you cannot hide, only route: over the rim at the back, down the pedestal or post, and secured so wind does not swing it.

Five times the draw of the 50 W unit for a basin that does not need it. The BDT250 is genuinely the right answer for a large, deep or badly exposed basin, and genuinely the wrong one for an 18-inch bowl in Ohio.
Any de-icer plugged into an indoor extension cord
Not a product, a practice — and the one thing on this site that is actually dangerous. Indoor cords are not rated for wet outdoor use and the connection point sits in weather. Use an outdoor-rated cord on a GFCI circuit, or move the bath closer to the socket.

- Will a de-icer crack my concrete bird bath?
- It will not cause the crack, but it will not prevent one either. Concrete absorbs water into the material; if the power fails and that trapped water freezes, the stone spalls. Concrete baths are the main case for buying a complete plastic or metal heated bath instead.
- Do de-icers run all the time?
- No. Every unit here is thermostatic, so the element switches off once the water is clear and stays off until it approaches freezing again. That is why the published wattage is a ceiling, not a prediction.
- Can I use a stock tank de-icer in a bird bath?
