How Heated Bird Baths Work
A sealed element, a thermostat, and a target of just-above-freezing. The mechanism is simple; the interesting part is how little of the time it actually runs.

A heated bird bath is a basin with a sealed electric element beneath it and a thermostat that switches the element on when the water approaches freezing and off once it is clear. The target is a few degrees above freezing, not warm. Because the thermostat cycles, the rated wattage on the box is a ceiling, not a running figure.
The three parts
- The element. A sealed resistive heater, either molded into the underside of the basin (complete heated baths) or in a submersible weighted housing (de-icers). Rated in watts, typically 50 to 250.
- The thermostat. A bimetallic or electronic switch that closes the circuit below a set temperature and opens it above another. This is the part that decides your bill.
- The housing and cord. Sealed for outdoor wet use, with a cord that has to reach a GFCI socket.
What the thermostat is actually doing
Most makers in this category will not tell you their set points. Erva does, and the figures are worth knowing because they generalize: the unit switches on at about 38 F and off once the water reaches about 65 F.
Read that carefully. The element is not trying to hold the bath at 38 F. It switches on a few degrees above freezing and then runs until the water is comfortably clear, at which point it stops and stays off until the water falls back down. So on a day where the air hovers around freezing, the element runs in bursts. On a night at minus fifteen it may barely stop.
Why the water never feels warm
It should not, and a bath that did would be a problem rather than a feature. Two reasons.
First, wet feathers in freezing air are dangerous for a bird. A bird that bathes in genuinely warm water in sub-freezing conditions leaves the bath soaked and loses insulation exactly when it needs it. Every unit here targets just-above-freezing precisely so the water is drinkable without encouraging a full bathe on a bitter day.
Second, physics. Fifty to a hundred and fifty watts spread through a gallon of water in freezing air, in wind, is barely enough to hold the line. There is no spare energy to make it warm. If your bath ever feels genuinely warm, the thermostat has failed and you should unplug it.
Why wattage is not the same as capability
A higher-wattage element does not keep water warmer. It keeps a larger volume of water above freezing, or the same volume above freezing in colder conditions. Both units are aiming at the same target temperature; the bigger one simply has more capacity to fight losses.
Losses come mostly from two places: the exposed water surface, and wind moving across it. That is why a wide shallow basin needs more wattage than a small deep one at the same temperature, and why siting a bath out of the wind does more for your running cost than any spec on the box.

What happens when the power goes out
The bath freezes, like any other bath. The thing to watch is the basin material: plastic and metal survive a full freeze, concrete and unglazed ceramic can crack as trapped water in the material expands. If you are on a long outage and the bath is porous, get the water out.
The element itself is fine frozen in ice; it is designed to be started from a frozen basin, which is what it does every time you switch one on for the first time in November.
