First: do you actually need the fountain?

Worth asking before you spend anything, because the honest answer for a lot of people is no. Moving water is a genuinely stronger bird attractant than still water — the sound and the movement are detectable from much further away, and it slows the film that builds on a stagnant basin. Those are real benefits.

But in a freeze, the thing birds are short of is liquid water, not moving water. Wattage decides your running cost every day of the winter. Cord length decides whether the bath can go where you want it at all — and it is the specification buyers discover after the box is open.

Wattage: match it to the basin, not to your fear of ice

The combination trade-off, stated plainly

A combined unit is one purchase, one cord and one thing to site. That is a real convenience and it is why this product category exists.

The cost is that the heater and the pump share a housing. Pumps are the part that fails in this category — they clog with debris, they seize after running dry, and they take the worst of the freeze-thaw. When the pump in a combined unit dies, you have generally lost the heater too, and the heater was the part doing the important work.

The alternative is to buy a proven de-icer and a separate pump, which gives you replaceable parts and a longer track record on the heating half — at the cost of two cords, two sockets and more clutter in a small basin. Neither answer is wrong. If you want one thing that works, buy the combination. If you want the heat to keep working in year three, buy them separately.

  • Agonizing over the AISITIN 46 W and 48 W variants

    The same maker lists several near-identical models a couple of watts apart. The difference is not meaningful in practice, and the listing page is confusing enough that people spend real time on a distinction that will not change anything. Buy whichever of the two is in stock.

  • Any of these on a socket that is not GFCI-protected

    Not a product, a practice. A ground-fault interrupter is the thing standing between water, electricity and a yard. If your outdoor socket is not protected, sort that out before the bath arrives rather than after.
